Bye bye North Pole

Well...so much for Santa's workshop...

North Pole could be ice-free this summer, scientists say
  • Story Highlights
  • Ice retreated to a record level last fall when the Northwest Passage opened briefly

  • Weather patterns will determine whether the ice cover melts completely this summer

  • Scientists say the Arctic meltdown is not part of a historic cycle

(CNN) -- The North Pole may be briefly ice-free by September as global warming melts away Arctic sea ice, according to scientists from the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado.

"We kind of have an informal betting pool going around in our center and that betting pool is 'does the North Pole melt out this summer?' and it may well," said the center's senior research scientist Mark Serreze.

It's a 50-50 bet that the thin Arctic sea ice, which was frozen last autumn, will completely melt away at the geographic North Pole, Serreze said.

The ice retreated to a record level in September when the Northwest Passage -- the sea route through the Arctic Ocean -- opened up briefly for the first time in recorded history.

"What we've seen through the past few decades is the Arctic sea ice cover is becoming thinner and thinner as the system warms up," Serreze said.

Specific weather patterns will determine whether the North Pole's ice cover melts completely this summer, he said.

"Last year, we had sort of a perfect weather pattern to get rid of ice to open up that Northwest Passage," Serreze said. "This year, a different pattern can set up so maybe we'll preserve some ice there. We're in a wait-and-see mode right now. We'll see what happens."

The brief lack of ice at the top of the globe will not bring any immediate consequences, he said.

"From the viewpoint of the science, the North Pole is just another point in the globe, but it does have this symbolic meaning," Serreze said. "There's supposed to be ice at the North Pole. The fact that we may not have any by the end of this summer could be quite a symbolic change."

Serreze said it's "just another indicator of the disappearing Arctic sea ice cover" but that it is happening so soon is "just astounding to me."

"Five years ago, to think that we'd even be talking about the possibility of the North Pole melting out in the summer, I would have never thought it," he said.

The melting, however, has been long seen as inevitable, he said.

"If you talked to me or other scientists just a few years ago, we were saying that we might lose all or most of the summer sea ice cover by anywhere from 2050 to 2100," Serreze said. "Then, recently, we kind of revised those estimates, maybe as early as 2030. Now, there's people out there saying it might be even before that. So, things are happening pretty quick up there."

Serreze said those who suggest the Arctic meltdown is just part of a historic cycle are wrong.

"It's not cyclical at this point. I think we understand the physics behind this pretty well," he said. "We've known for at least 30 years, from our earliest climate models, that it's the Arctic where we'd see the first signs of global warming.

"It's a situation where we hate to say we told you so, but we told you so," he said.

Serreze said the Arctic sea ice will not be the same for decades.

"If we had a few cold years in a row, we could put sort of a temporary damper on it, but I think at this point going to an ice-free Arctic Ocean is inevitable," he said. "I don't think we can stop that now."

Reduced greenhouse gas emissions could "cool things down a bit," he said.

"It would recover fairly quickly, but it's just not going to happen for a while," he said. "I think we're committed at this point."

There are some positive aspects to the ice melting, he said. Ships could use the Northwest Passage to save time and energy by no longer having to travel through the Panama Canal or around Cape Horn.

"There's also, or course, oil at the bottom of the Arctic Ocean," he said. "Now, the irony of that is kind of clear but the fact that we are opening up the Arctic Ocean does make it more accessible."

The U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center Web site -- NSIDC.org -- publishes a near-realtime image of the Arctic sea ice cover.

I'm sure it was strictly for medical purposes that they were using anything in the first place. =-)

McCain's video game...

::smacks forehead::

Yes...this 1980's based video game will certainly help convince young voters that you're hip... I'm not even sure I was alive when the video game this one is based on was invented...

I was going to add the game to this entry so you could see it...but...no joke...the code they provided crashed the rest of my blog. No joke...I tried twice...

So instead - you'll have to click here if you'd like to see it.

McCain reaches out to youth - God help us

This McCain campaign video - an effort to reach out to youth - is...sad...funny...but sad...

Here's the take The Daily Show had on this video:

OMG! Big John Cornyn

You have my word...this is not a spoof...I know it may feel and look like one...but really...it's not a spoof...

Just in case you're still not sure if it's a spoof check this out.

My face displayed a complete look of shock, bewilderment, confusion, humor and horror all at the same time....

Seriously...I don't know Texas politics that well...but I just can't imagine that this will work out well for him...if I was on his campaign staff....I would resign...fast...

Obama Pride

Check out this video about Obama and LGBT issues.

RIP George Carlin

I always thought George Carlin was a pretty entertaining and amusing guy. I always liked watching his routines and performances in movies...especially Kevin Smith's films. As a kid I thought he did a great job as Mr. Conductor on various Thomas the Tank Engine shows on PBS. When I got older I always found it funny that the Mr. Conductor was the same person in all of these way out there comedy routines. =-)

Here are some of George's own thoughts on death...

The song Bobby and I are now addicted to...

Okay - I mentioned the commercial from Apple featuring Coldplay's new song (Viva la Vida) several posts ago. What I forgot to do was post the entire song...oops! So...here is a video with the entire song... Below the video are the lyrics for the song. Enjoy!

"I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own
I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt, pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can not explain
Once you know there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world
(Ohhh)

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in.
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People could not believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries Wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can not explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world
(Ohhhhh Ohhh Ohhh)

Hear Jerusalem bells are ringings
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can not explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
Oooooh Oooooh Oooooh"

Tribute to Senator Robert Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Some anniversaries regarding both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy passed recently. I posted a brief blog about MLK, but never got around to posted one for RFK.

I respect and appreciate both of these men a great deal. I came across this famous video today. It's one of my favorite for many reasons. It's such an ironic and symbolic overlap of these two significant leaders. It's so amazing that this speech was made by RFK about MLK only months before his own assassination and less than a decade after JFK's assassination.

I learned even more about this speech on NPR this past year and have grown to appreciate it even more. Two things in particular..

1. RFK's son points out that because the neighborhood where RFK gave this speech was considered to be so dangerous that some of the police escort separated him from a chunk of his staff. It happens that he was separated from the staff which had the original draft for this speech. He didn't have it with him when he gave the speech. So much if this is from last minute notes, his memory and his heart. The poem that he recites at the end of the speech was from his memory - it was one of his favorite poems.

2. News of MLK's death resulted in riots across the USA. Almost every major city had at least some size riot. The city that this speech was given in, Indianapolis - which is not exactly known for it's racial peacefulness at that time - was one of the only major cities that didn't have major violence break out.

This isn't my favorite video for this speech - I don't like all of the photos - but it has a good and complete version of the audio.

As an added bonus I've also included this amazing speech given by Robert F. Kennedy on April 5, 1968...

The only Reagan speech I liked...

Okay - it's probably not a surprise to discover that I'm not exactly one of the biggest fans of Ronald Reagan (or The Power Rangers for that matter - but that's another story).

However, there is one speech that he delivered which I do appreciate. Something we were watching on TV today made me think of it and I've decided to share it with you... It somewhat pains me that it was Reagan who delivered it - but I suppose that makes it somehow even more significant.

In case you are somehow not familiar with what he's talking about in his speech...here's a clip to help remind you...

The Procrastinator

This was the funniest thing I've seen on The Daily Show in a long time...perhaps the funniest thing I've seen on television in a long time...my stomach hurt I was laughing so hard at times...particularly after the video where Bush talks about his belief on getting climate initiatives passed by the end of his term...

This press conference clip is perhaps the funniest thing I've seen Bush do lately...

RIP Little Cat - 1990-2008

Little Cat, my cat for the last 18 years, passed away early this morning.

It was all rather fitting for her personality... She woke Bobby and I up - and once she was certain we were awake and paying attention - got comfortable right near us and then...began to pass away. I don't know why, but I suddenly and rather quickly (remember - I'm not a person who thinks clearly when I first wake up) had an idea of what was happening.

Her health had actually been improving lately. Well...she had never really been sick...but she had lost some hair about a year ago. Recently she was starting to grow it back - so I suppose that's what I really mean by her health had been improving lately. Because of her age I was always on the look out for some of the "early signs" I've heard about. Bobby and I both agree that she hadn't been showing any of these signs. So while we knew this was going to happen one day - the exact timing caught me off guard.

It was a little drawn out - but seemed very painless. She did put up a fight and even hissed a few times. I know this sounds odd - but they didn't sound like hisses indicating she was in pain...more like she was really pissed off about the whole situation...her own way of saying "Fuck you death!"

Tribble knew almost right away that something was up - and jumped up on the bed with us. I was glad that we were able to all be there with her and that given the circumstances...she seemed to go on her own terms.

I've had Little Cat for eighteen years - she been with me through it all. I think in my life I've spent more time with Little Cat than any other living thing on the planet. She was always such a smart and unique cat - she had a lot of attitude and did things on her own terms. From pawing my face to walk me up when she wanted my attention for something to her lifelong pursuit of the freshest water around - in some ways she was very "cat" but in a lot of ways she was unlike other cats I've known. I still think she always thought she was more of a dog than a cat.

I loved, cherished and respected Little Cat a great deal. I know people always refer to their pets as their children, but I think I never felt exactly like Little Cat was my child (maybe because I was so young when I got her)...she was more of a close and trusted friend who kept an eye on everything going on. I hope she enjoyed her life and our time together - I like to think she did. I will miss her a great deal and will certainly never forget her.

This is an online photo gallery of various photos of Little Cat.

Here are a few photos from that gallery...
